What is an Automatic Rally (AR) in Wyckoff?
The Automatic Rally is the reflexive bounce after a selling climax in accumulation, or the reflexive drop after a buying climax in distribution. It sets the opposite boundary of the trading range and happens because the dominant pressure simply ran out.
How It Works
The name tells you everything. This move is automatic. After the selling climax exhausts sellers, there's nobody left pushing price down. The bounce that follows isn't driven by aggressive new demand. It's driven by absence. Sellers stepped aside, and price floated up. The same thing happens in distribution, just inverted. After a buying climax exhausts buyers, the Automatic Reaction drops price because there's no one left bidding it up. Volume on the AR typically fades compared to the climax, suggesting the move is about exhaustion, not fresh conviction. What the AR gives you is a boundary. In accumulation, the AR high becomes the upper edge of the range. In distribution, the AR low becomes the lower edge. Every secondary test, spring, and upthrust that follows plays out relative to these levels.
Why It Matters
Without the AR, you don't have a range to read. The climax and AR together give you two lines on the chart, and from there you can watch how price behaves between them. That's where the real analysis starts.
Common Mistake
Chasing the AR rally, thinking the markdown is over. The AR looks like a reversal because price moves sharply off the lows. But the range has barely begun. Secondary tests tend to pull price back toward the climax level. The AR marks a boundary, not a breakout.
Example
After the selling climax, price bounces and you label it the AR. But volume on the bounce is just as heavy as the climax itself, with aggressive buying driving price sharply higher. That's not an automatic rally. It's a V-reversal with genuine demand. The AR is passive: sellers exhausted, price drifts up on declining volume. No one is pushing price higher. There's just no one left to push it lower.
Stoic Insight
Epictetus: 'No man is free who is not master of himself.' The automatic rally tempts you to chase. Price shoots up after the climax and the urgency feels real. Mastery here means recognizing that the range is just forming. Better entries come later.
