What is Support and Resistance in Trading?

Support is a price level where buying pressure tends to prevent the price from falling further. Resistance is a price level where selling pressure tends to prevent the price from rising further.

How It Works

Support and resistance form because market participants remember previous price levels where significant buying or selling occurred. If EUR/USD bounced off 1.1000 three times, traders expect it to bounce again, and their collective buying at that level can make it self-fulfilling. When support breaks, it often becomes resistance (and vice versa). This 'role reversal' happens because the traders who bought at support are now underwater and may sell to break even when the price returns to that level. Support and resistance can be horizontal (a specific price), diagonal (trendlines), or dynamic (moving averages). Smart money concepts reframe these as supply and demand zones with more precise criteria.

Why It Matters

Most trading strategies rely on identifying these levels. Setting stop losses, planning entries, defining targets: support and resistance give you reference points for all of it. They're the simplest form of market structure.

Common Mistake

Treating support and resistance as exact price lines rather than zones. Price rarely bounces at a single pip level. A zone of 10-20 pips around the level tends to produce more realistic expectations than a single horizontal line.

Example

XAU/USD (gold) has bounced off $2,000 four times over the past month. Traders identify $2,000 as strong support. They set buy orders near that level and place stop losses below $1,990 in case the level breaks.

Stoic Insight

Chrysippus argued that events unfold through cause and effect. Support and resistance work because past buying and selling at a level creates market memory, and that memory causes future reactions. The level has no inherent power. Collective behavior creates the effect.
