What is Market Structure in Trading?

Market structure is the pattern of swing highs and swing lows that defines the current trend direction. An uptrend creates higher highs and higher lows. A downtrend creates lower highs and lower lows.

How It Works

Reading market structure comes first in smart money analysis. Before looking for order blocks, imbalances, or entries, you need to know which direction the market is trending. Swing highs and lows are identified by looking for points where the price reversed direction with conviction. Not every minor zig-zag qualifies. The swing points should be significant relative to the timeframe you're analyzing. Market structure can be bullish, bearish, or ranging (consolidation). In a ranging market, highs and lows stay roughly equal with no clear directional bias. Smart money traders often wait for a clear BOS out of a range before committing to a direction.

Why It Matters

Every other SMC concept builds on market structure. Order blocks, liquidity sweeps, BOS, and CHoCH only make sense in the context of the prevailing structure. Trading against structure without a clear reversal signal is a frequent source of losses.

Common Mistake

Switching between timeframes until the structure matches an existing bias. If the 4-hour chart is bearish but the 15-minute shows bullish structure, picking the lower timeframe to justify a long trade ignores the dominant flow. Higher timeframe structure generally carries more weight.

Example

On the 4-hour EUR/USD chart, you identify swing lows at 1.1000, 1.1030, and 1.1050, each higher than the last. Swing highs at 1.1060, 1.1085, and 1.1100, also ascending. Structure is bullish. You look for long entries only.

Cleanthes spent years carrying water at night so he could study philosophy by day. Reading market structure takes similar patience. Sit with the chart long enough to see the real pattern, not the one you arrived hoping to find.
